CASE STUDY

Eastern Palliative Care (EPC)
General Manager - Nursing & Medical Services
The appointment of Maria Logan

The Organisation

Operating since 1997, Eastern Palliative Care Association Incorporated (EPC), is the largest single provider of community-based palliative care services in Victoria and supports the Eastern Region of Melbourne. Services are provided in the local government areas of Boroondara, Manningham, Maroondah, Whitehorse, Monash, Knox, and Yarra Ranges.

The organisation supports people in their last year of life with a terminal / life-limiting illness who have complex symptoms whether they be physical, psychosocial, emotional, or spiritual. EPC is fully accredited through The Australian Council on Health Care Standards (ACHS) ensuring quality, safety, and performance at all levels of service delivery.

There are many challenges in providing a palliative care service and EPC has worked to ensure clients who meet admission criteria are supported in their wish to be cared for at home. EPC is largely funded by the Department of Health, Victoria but also conducts fundraising programs to increase income and in turn, service offerings.

The Brief

Working in collaboration with the CEO, the General Manager, Nursing & Medical Services will participate in the strategic development of EPC. They will also ensure the provision of high-quality interdisciplinary services through leadership, strategic direction and solid operational management of service delivery staff, and effective resource and revenue management.

EPC wished to appoint a seasoned professional with the experience, capability and emotional intelligence to lead the large numbers of nurses and medical officers to deliver high quality community palliative care.

The Process

After a proven record of successful placements within EPC, Brooker Consulting was engaged to conduct an executive search and selection process to identify an outstanding candidate to be EPC’s next GM. An extensive strategy was outlined, and the campaign was launched by Brooker after a detailed briefing with key stakeholders.

Brooker Consulting communicated with 120 candidates locally who may have met the brief. A comprehensive combination of external advertising and targeted executive search generated an impressive level of interest, and a high-quality shortlist.

Patient and Nurse

The Outcome

After the presentation of five worthy applicants to the Selection Panel, four candidates were interviewed. Following multiple steps in the Brooker Consulting Methodology, one standout candidate was referenced and presented to the panel. With more than 20 years of broad experience in nursing across intensive care and other hospital roles, Maria Logan was appointed as the next GM of Nursing and Medical Services.

What Eastern Palliative Care Said

“I am excited to have Maria join our team here and am sure she will fit in well. Thanks for your support.” Gaylene Coulton, CEO.
